Pistachio trees mainly grows in the Middle-East. Iran, Afganistan and Pakistan are major exporters of this nut. However also countries in Europe, like Greece and Italy and the USA have pistachio orchards.
A pistachio tree is male or female and only female trees can bear fruits. However without male trees this is not possible, so the female trees have to be pollinated by the males. When the nuts are ripe, they will be open in a natural manner. However it’s also possible that the shell of the pistachio will stay closed. This means that the nut has not been matured sufficiently.
You can compare the pistachio tree with the cashewnut tree. It will take minimum 7 years before a tree will bear fruits. The crop of pistachio’s is one time a year and will take place during oktober and november.
Pistachios in shell will be consumed as a snack. The nuts in shell will be roasted and can be treated with salt. Raw pistachio’s won’t be consumed oftenly. Shelled pistachios are more expensive than unshelled pistachios and will be industrally used for example for making pistachio ice or will be used for dishes.
