Brazilnuts are growing in South-America only, mainly in the Amazon forrest. The Brazilnuts will be shipped from Bolivia, Peru and Brazil to the rest of the world. Brazilnus will be harvested from December to May and mostly fall from the trees, however there are also locals who will climb in the trees to collect them. This is not without any risk since the trees are around 50 meters heigh.
The Brazilnuts has a shape of a banana and are clustered in a capsule. The size of the capsule is around 10 cm to 15 cm. You can compare this capsule with a coconut. The content of this capsule differs a lot. Sometimes you will only find 10 raw brazilnuts and sometimes you have a capsule which will contain more than 20 raw brazilnuts. It’s very striking that there is a major percentage of selenium present in the brazilnuts.
Brazilnuts are mainly used in snack mixes, roasted as well as unroasted mixes. However nowadays also the bakery industry is expermentalizing with this nut. One can think of nutbars, cookies and pies. The nuts will ofcourse be diced before it will be used as ingredient.
