Dates are available in many different sizes and types. They mainly grow in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Israel, Algeria and Tunisia. Countries that play a less important role in exports are Mexico, Spain, Greece, Libya and Morocco. The dates grow in warm drying areas and are also frequently used in those areas in meals and as a snack.
Dates are also becoming increasingly popular in Western Europe. They are often used in the industry as a substitute for sugar because the date is much healthier. The best-known type is the medjoul date, which is also sold the most. Unfortunately, it has a shorter shelf life than, for example, the sukkari or deglet nour date. The harvest of dates takes place mainly in the months of September, October and November.
